Where does Mexico get its gasoline from?
Mexico obtains its gasoline from a combination of domestic production and imports, particularly from the United States.
Domestic Production
Mexico's state-owned oil and gas company, Pemex, is the primary entity responsible for refining crude oil into gasoline and other petroleum products. However, Pemex's refineries have faced significant challenges, including maintenance issues and inefficient operations, which have impacted their production capacity24.
To address these issues, the Mexican government, under President López Obrador, has invested in refining infrastructure. For example, Pemex has acquired the Deer Park refinery in Texas, which will help process more of Mexico's crude oil and produce gasoline and diesel for the domestic market2.
Imports
Despite efforts to enhance domestic refining, Mexico still relies heavily on imports of refined petroleum products, including gasoline. In 2022, the United States exported over 1.8 billion barrels of refined petroleum products to Mexico, which accounts for more than 72% of Mexico’s domestic gasoline, diesel, and other fuel consumption34.
These imports are crucial because Mexico's domestic refineries are not sufficient to meet the country's demand for refined products, making the United States a significant supplier of gasoline and other fuels to Mexico.
