What is the national language of India?

India does not have a national language. However, Hindi is the official language of the Union Government of India, as stated in Article 343 of the Constitution of India. Additionally, English is also used officially alongside Hindi for government purposes, as per the Official Languages Act of 19631. The distinction between "official" and "national" is important, as the Constitution does not confer the status of a national language on any language1.
