Can someone know if you read their Twitter message?

On Twitter, the sender of a direct message (DM) can indeed know if you have read their message, but there are some nuances and controls you can apply.

Read Receipts

By default, Twitter displays read receipts for direct messages. When you read a DM, a check mark or "Seen" indicator appears next to the message, informing the sender that you have read it234.

Disabling Read Receipts

You can disable read receipts to prevent the sender from knowing if you've read their message. To do this, you need to adjust your settings:

• On the Twitter website or mobile app, go to the "Settings and Support" menu.
• Select "Settings and privacy."
• Navigate to the "Privacy and safety" section.
• Under "Direct Messages," you can toggle off the "Show read receipts" option234.

However, disabling read receipts means you will also not receive read receipts for the messages you send to others.

Re-reading Messages

Even if read receipts are enabled, the sender will only know that you have read their message at least once. They will not be able to see how many times you have re-read the message or if you are currently viewing it again3.
